North Branch Trip ReportNorth Branch Trip report- Saturday turned out to be a beautiful day on the Bloomington section of the North Branch of the Potomac. Eight of us made the trip and several others from the club followed shortly after our put in time at 12:15. Lindy invited a couple to join us. In addition, club members John Diller, Jeff Davis, Matt Sloan, Garrett Rinehart, and myself, paddled the river. Every one was in a different boat and we did some switching around to make it interesting. As was predicted, Jeff was the first to swim (he was in a thrill seeker, so it does not count). There were others who decided to count the fish, in spite of the cold water. How do they get that water so cold-I wish I had brought my pogies-and long sleeves-and another shirt. Thank goodness I wore a hat. John forgot his helmet, so he made a friend and borrowed one at the putin. It’s been a while for John, he has been racing flat water, and he did not idiot check, or decided he had something to protect up there, afterall. First timer on whitewater, Garrett did great. We taught him to roll at the FSU pool, where he got a hand roll. No swims, no pins, no rolls (the water was so cold we let him off the hook and did not knock him over in normal initiation fashion). We had lunch at the play spot half way down, and then some of us left the others in the dust and jammed on out. Again, Garrett did great and kept up. He even led the way through a few rapids when whoever he was following stopped mid rapid to play. Anyone who wants to paddle the North Branch on the release can make contact through the club river trips web site.
