Savage Club Trip8/31/08- Trip Report
YPC Savage River
About six club members got together on a beautiful August Sunday, to paddle the Savage River. New student member Griffith Williams, from FSU, joined Lindy Shank, Jeff Davis, Matt Sloan, and Chuck Stump for the first run at 9am. Jeff brought Dave and another friend along, too. We took the shuttle bus up and met Jeff and friends at the upper parking lot. Out of the whole group, Lindy and Chuck were the only two that had done the river before. Griffith and Matt’s skills were good enough to help keep it all together. We paddled the upper section and at the dam, Jeff’s friends decided to walk the race course. We regrouped at the Allegany Bridge and continued. Dave and company forgot to bring their roll, so before we got to Memorial Rock, but after they swam, they elected to take out. They were encouraged to join the club and come to some roll sessions. The rest of the group continued without incident. We got to the surfing wave, but the first timers could not get on it, so after several tries, we kept on crusin’. The second run went a lot faster and Dave joined us in a Thrill Seeker.
We saw lots of swimmers and lost boats, but our group stayed intact. Club member John Diller got there late and chased us on our 2nd run. Jeff, who has lived on the Savage for a long time, finally got to run it. Thanks to ASCI for helping to make it all possible.
